A large-scale crowdsourced analysis of abuse against women journalists and politicians on Twitter

arXiv.org Machine Learning

We report the first, to the best of our knowledge, hand-in-hand collaboration between human rights activists and machine learners, leveraging crowd-sourcing to study online abuse against women on Twitter. On a technical front, we carefully curate an unbiased yet low-variance dataset of labeled tweets, analyze it to account for the variability of abuse perception, and establish baselines, preparing it for release to community research efforts. On a social impact front, this study provides the technical backbone for a media campaign aimed at raising public and deciders' awareness and elevating the standards expected from social media companies.

How visual recognition is set to change advertising - MarTech Today

Ad relevancy is key to moving a customer down their purchase path. The consumer profiles we build on each individual user provide insight into their needs, brand biases, social stances and much, much more. When done correctly, we are able to better understand a prospect, allowing us to place a relevant ad in front of a person who is actively shopping for our brands or products. To be even more successful, we need to go beyond what that individual wants at that specific moment. Behavioral economics has shown that consistent touch points over a period of time allow us to influence potential customers when they are activated to make a purchase decision at a later date.

Crimson Hexagon regains Facebook data access

#artificialintelligence

Analytics company Crimson Hexagon says Facebook has reinstated its data access to Facebook and Instagram. That access was suspended last month, with Facebook saying it was investigating whether the company had violated any of its data use policies. In this case, the issue appears to be related to some of Crimson Hexagon's contracts with the U.S. government, with Facebook saying it wasn't aware of those contracts when contacted by The Wall Street Journal. What followed, according to a blog post by Crimson Hexagon Dan Shore, was "several weeks of constructive discussion and information exchange." It seems that Facebook was satisfied with what it learned and ended Crimson Hexagon's suspension. Shore said that government customers make up less than 5 percent of the company's business, adding, "To our knowledge, no government customer has used the Crimson Hexagon platform for surveillance of any individual or group."

Facebook Suspends Analytics Firm on Concerns About Sharing of Public User-Data

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

Facebook Inc. suspended another company that harvested data from its site and said it was investigating whether the analytics firm's contracts with the U.S. government and a Russian nonprofit tied to the Kremlin violate the platform's policies. Crimson Hexagon, based in Boston, has had contracts in recent years to analyze public Facebook data for those and other clients, according to people familiar with the matter and federal procurement data. Crimson Hexagon says it has the largest repository of public social media posts, totaling more than one trillion, from sites that also include Twitter Inc. TWTR -0.05% and Instagram. Crimson Hexagon operates with little oversight from Facebook once it pulls public data from the social-media platform, according to more than a dozen people familiar with the business. The government contracts weren't approved by Facebook in advance, for example, the people said.

Why Facebook just suspended another data analytics firm

Washington Post - Technology News

Facebook said Friday it suspended a longtime partner that had used data from Facebook and other social networks to assist governments -- including Russia, Turkey, and the U.S. -- in monitoring public sentiment, a more cautious approach in the wake of a data privacy scandal. Facebook said it had found no evidence of wrongdoing by the Boston-based company, Crimson Hexagon, but it was curtailing the company's access to its data while it investigated the matter. The preemptive move represents a shift for Facebook in the wake of the controversy over political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, which Facebook said inappropriately collected the private profiles of more than 80 million Facebook users. The social network is under investigation from three different federal agencies over its work with Cambridge Analytica and, since the crisis erupted, has suspended more than 200 apps which had access to Facebook data. Crimson Hexagon, which primarily used public, aggregated data from people who made their profiles available for anyone to see, is the largest of this new wave of suspensions.

How Did You Benefit from Machine Learning Today?

#artificialintelligence

In an earlier blog, we talked about how machine learning is used in social media analytics. In this post, we're going to review machine learning (ML) basics and examples, and explore some of the areas you might be unaware of where ML is having a significant impact. "Evolved from the study of pattern recognition and computational learning theory in artificial intelligence, machine learning explores the study and construction of algorithms that can learn from and make predictions on data." The goal of ML is pretty simple -- teach computer systems to perform a task. The computer system gains experience by observing patterns from examples rather than being programmed with explicit instructions or rules.

Twitter Data Business Is Growing As Jack Dorsey Courts Developers

International Business Times

Twitter was not always an advertising business, and it doesn't want to limit itself to promoted tweets. Under second-time CEO Jack Dorsey, the company has been reinvigorating its foundation as a real-time data service, and the revenue is following. Since Dorsey arrived last summer, he has been cultivating relationships with developers -- particularly those who pay for Twitter's data. In February, Dorsey listed developers as his fifth priority, behind the more obvious need to address the core service, live video, creators and safety. But interestingly, this fifth priority is the one that's already been bringing in more cash and continues to make Twitter relevant.
